Effective Ergonomic INTERVENTION WITH Anti-vibration Gloves
and Medical Surveillance to Minimize Hand-Arm Vibration
Hazards in the Workplace

Medical surveillance was used at the workplace to determine and monitor the level of Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTRS) present in workers exposed to upper extremity vibration.  Ergonomic interventions in the form of new tools with lower vibration levels and the use of ISO 10819 anti-vibration (AV) gloves were associated with decreases in the pathological findings and symptoms in these workers.  Workers who used either new lower vibration tools or ISO 10819 AV gloves showed similar reductions in pathological findings and symptoms. Worders who used both new lower vibration tools and ISO 10819 AV gloves showed the greates reduction in pathological findings and symptoms. Workers who used neither new lower vibration tools nor ISO 10819 AV gloves were more likely to show continued progression in the development of pathological findings and symptoms.  These findings suggest that ergonomic intervention can be effective in reducing the workplace hazard of exposure to tool vibration.
